Journal Article Analysis
The title of my article I have chosen is You can’t go home again….or can you? I am a big believer of family being together for the holiday or any special occasions. My grandparents raised me and my older sister so I think that is why I like all my sisters and brothers around during the holidays. When I saw this title I thought it would be a good article to analyze.
This article talks about rather or not you can go home again. We have all heard the saying that “you can’t go home again.” Thomas Wolfe says that “maturity means learning that the past cannot be recovered.” I agree with that because the past is just what it is the past. We all would love to go back to the past but that is something that nobody can ever do.
Every year during the holidays the bus, train, and airports are deluged in late December by children and grandchildren returning home to visit their families. The main holiday that everyone wants to come home for is Christmas, if they don’t get to make it for no other holiday they will make sure they make it for Christmas. The article also was talking about how Christmas comes to the television. Every show if you have notice deals the holidays during that time. Whatever holiday it is that is what the show is centered around. There was a movie called This Christmas and it was a very good movie about family coming together at Christmas time and helping each over the obstacles they had in their life.
It gives us three basic ways of thinking about home in relation to Christmas. One of them was being or staying home. What this means is that instead of going anywhere you just stay at home. Things are as they should be everyone is at home. Nowadays with everything so expensive there are a lot of people doing just that stay at home with the family that is already there including friends also and just remise. The second way of thinking about home in relation to Christmas is the restoring home. This is about distress caused by an abnormal situation. Things are not quite as they should be. Something is temporarily lacking. Someone is temporarily missing. By the end, however, normality is restored. Everything would be back to normal, that something that is lacking is there and that someone that is missing has made it home. The third and final way is going or returning home. What this means is everyone coming home for Christmas, all the family meeting at one house for that big diner to sit around talk and have fun. This is something that I see a lot with college kids these days. They might not be able to get home for no other time but they make sure they can make it home for Christmas.
As for me I think that you can go home. It is nothing like going home at anytime. There is nothing like being at home with your family who loves you. I have heard someone say if “you can’t go home where else can you go.” I think that is a true statement because you always want to be able to come home. To give you something to think about what about the people that doesn’t have a home to go to. You should always be able to go home no matter what the circumstances is because at home you will find the love and the peace that you can’t find anywhere else.

For my weekly pop culture I chose reality shows. Reality shows has really became very popular. Reality television is a genre of television programming which presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors.
Reality television began in the 1940’s with Allen Funt’s Candid Camera. This show was about people broadcast unsuspecting ordinary people reacting to pranks. In the 1950’s a game show name Beat the Clock and Truth or Consequences previewed and it was about contestants in wacky competitions stunts, and practical jokes.
A lot of people think that reality shows just came into play in the 2000’s, but they really started in the 1940’s. The shows then weren’t like the shows of today. Some of the shows today can be so disgusted like the show where the constantans had to eat weird stuff and had do weird stuff, I can’t think of the show name right off hand but I know you know which show I am talking about.
There is some good reality shows like Run’s House, America’s Next Top Model, and Sunday’s Best, just to name a few. I named these because these are some of my favorites. Even though Run’s House is scripted it is still a very good show. America’s Next Top Model, I like the drama that the girls are calling with each other, and Sunday’s Best is the newest one of the reality show. It is base off of America’s Idol but they are singing gospel. The first season was really a big hit.

The pop culture I have chosen for this week is soap operas. I remember being young and watching the soaps with my grandmother. At that time I didn’t like them I just was watching them because I wanted to watch cartoons after they went off. But, after a while the soaps started to grow on me.
What is a soap opera? It is a fiction story that continues on from one episode to another, usually seen on television. Soaps have been on television long enough to be recognize as soaps. The name soap opera stems from original dramatic serials broadcast on radio that had soap manufacturers such as Procter and Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, and Lever Brothers as the show’s sponsors. They were broadcast on radio serial during weekday daytime slots, that is when the housewives could watch them and the shows were aimed at the housewives that way making it a predominantly female audiences.
Just about every woman I know watches the soaps. They are into them so until they will record it and watch it later if they work first shift. They are very easy to get hook on, if you watch it today the way they end it for that day makes you want to watch it the next day just to see what is going to happen the next day. I enjoy watching soaps, seeing whose leaving and whose coming. Back in the day soaps stayed on for 30 minutes but not the soaps that I watch stay on for 1 hour and I really enjoy that.

The pop culture I chose for this week is computers. Computers have become the way of the world. You can do just about anything on computers. With a computer you can work from home, go to school from home, make movies, there is no end to what you can do on a computer. Just about every household has a computer or plan on buying one. That is because they are so good to have. Don’t get me wrong they have their bad side too, but overall they are good to have.
I have heard people say what a great device they are and what a wonderful help to human beings. What this means is that if you don’t want to go out and pay a bill you just get on your computer do it from home. Now days people don’t write letters like they use to instead they send emails. I never was one to write a letter but I will send an email, it’s much quicker and better also save you the money for a stamp.
All of the offices and industry are using computers. It is much easier and much better. I don’t see to many people doing things by hand these days. I work for H&R Block and the computer does all the work. I never thought that I would be doing someone taxes. All you do is put the numbers in and the computer does the rest, easy uh. There are some people that are just scare of a computer. People have said that they don’t know what to do with it; I have even heard someone say they might break it or mess it up. A computer can be your friend or it can be your enemy it all depend on how you use it. The best advice is to use it for your good, don’t try to do nothing evil with it a nd it will be alright.

The pop culture I have chosen is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart can be traced back to the 1940’s when a man name Sam Walton open a store named Walton five and dime in Bentonville, Arkansas. In Bentonville, Arkansas is where everything begin.
I love how they changed the store so that when ever you go to a Wal-Mart you can get everything you need at one store. People have always said that you can’t go in Wal-Mart and look around or go and pick up one thing because you will always come out with 2 or 3 bags in your hand.
Some people say that Wal-Mart is too crowded, it does be crowded but that is because it has so much to offer. Usely when you can’t find something you can go to Wal-Mart and there it is or even when doing a price check there is a change that you might be able to find it cheaper at
Wal-Mart. This store has just about everything you need and more and the prices are reasonable. I have never heard anything negative about these stores although there are problem some people that don’t like Wal-Mart.
I read that they don’t like the way they check your receipts but that is because of everything that is going on. There is so much crime these days that you have to do things like check your receipts, and check your bags. Thieves are smart nowadays that you have to stay one step ahead of them.
I love Wal-Mart and thank Mr. Sam Walton for open the first Wal-Mart.

The three icons I chosen is reality television show America’s Next Top Model, the game of the 80’s Pac man, and the cell phone.
America’s Next Top Model is a reality television show in which a number of women compete for the title of America's Next Top Model and a chance to start their career in the modeling industry. The show was created and hosted by a Tyra Banks which was a very famous model and also has a successful talk show. I really enjoy watching this show just to see what kind of photos the girls will be taking. This show gives girls a chance to see if they got what it take to be a model and also puts them on the right track to modeling and other careers. My daughter started me watching it, it was the episode that Eva was on and won and every since then I have been watching America’s Next Top Model.

My next icon is Pac Man. That was the game in the 80’s. I remember on a Friday night after every home basketball game everyone would go to a store that had the game and we would play for hours. It would be quarter’s line up to play the winner. A couple of years back someone came out with Pac man game you hook up to your TV and of course as soon as I heard about it I went and bought it. My children love play Pac man, my children love playing Pac man too.
Cell phones are something people just can’t do with out. You will see just about everyone with a cell phone. I think that cell phones are one thing that everyone would need sometime or another. I remember when I was working nights at the hospital and I had a flat tire, it was like about 2 am and I was on a long dark road. I was so glad I had a cell; I was able to call th
e police to come and help me change my tire. If I didn’t have a cell phone I would have had to just sit there and hope someone nice that I could trust come and help. Cell phones are something that we all will need at sometime or another.

The current pop culture that I have chosen is the Nintendo Wii. It has come and took the world by storm. Everyone is talking about the Nintendo Wii and all the different games and every thing it offers. Even though it may cost a pretty penny, there is still a big demand for this game. I once heard about doctors using the Nintendo Wii in physical therapy, I think that would be great, having fun while getting well.
Some of the opinion that I have heard people say is that it is actually the most amazing thing ever. Adults have really taken to this game. It is not a game just for kids or teenagers; it is for the whole family. It is something that a family could enjoy. You would use to hear parents say they are buying a game for there son but now it is not like that. I was in Wal-Mart and heard a parent say that she was buying the Nintendo Wii for herself.
Instead of just having games for fun it also has fitness that a lot of people are getting into. I read where they was saying that kids playing the video games don’t get enough exercise, but not with the Wii. Because of how you have to play the game kids and adult get enough exercise and more. On the web site www.gonintedo.com it said, at the Sedgebrook retirement community in Lincolnshire, where the average age is 77, something unexpected has been transpiring since Christmas. The residents, most of who have never picked up a video game controller in their life, suddenly can’t put the things down. One lady said, “I’ve never been into video games,” said 72-year-old Flora Dierbach last week as her husband took a twirl with the Nintendo Wii’s bowling game. “But this is addictive.”
I think that the Nintendo Wii is a great game. I have not heard anything negative even though it probably is some negative responses out about the Wii, but all-n-all I think it is a good game for the family to play and spend time with each other.
